Edda - illuminated tales

Lightbox

Edda

Illuminated Stories consists of three light boxes built up from several layers of paper that are hand-cut and illuminated from the inside. The boxes were part of my bachelor's project at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design in Bergen.

The motifs are inspired by the Norse tale Loki's Children in the Edda. The technique of layering hand-cut paper helps to create an image that is both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, a feeling that one can see inward into another world.

To enhance the three-dimensional expression and drama, light is used. The layers are given a graduated shadow effect and the space in the work opens inward. The drama of the story was enhanced by presenting the series of light boxes in a dark room together with a recorded narration that conveyed the story of Loki's Children.
