Wagasa sky - commissioned suggestions

Commission competition

Frakkagjerd Junior High School

The presented proposal is a light installation consisting of 20-30 umbrella/parasol objects that are intended to hang from the round ceiling in the heart room at Frakkagjerd Junior High School.
The umbrellas/parasols have a framework consisting of metal, and are covered with handmade kozo paper. During my stay at the Awagami paper factory in Japan, I made a series of colorful, unique papers that formed the basis of the idea for this work. The paper was specially made to have a transformative effect when the umbrellas are illuminated from the inside. To achieve the dramatic shift in character, I make the paper with two different sides. The side of the paper that faces outwards towards the heart room will be calm, bright and preferably solid in color while the opposite side of the paper is colorful and textured. When the paper is illuminated from inside the umbrella shape, the colors from the inside come to light, creating an effect that is almost reminiscent of a starry sky or a galaxy.
The light in the umbrellas is designed to be programmable so that it turns on and off throughout the day at long intervals.
In many ways, the work reflects the sky above it, its many changes and nuances. From soft clouds to sparkling stars. My wish was that the work would add a living and slightly magical
dimension to the space that aroused curiosity.
